Reading a few works now… largely w/o intentional direction. It seems my reading habits follow the condition of my brain — disheveled or ordered.

Aurelius’ Meditations is coming as a great and digestible novelty. It’s as if the Proverbs were given a Roman redux.

Also reading T. Williams’ Glass Menagerie. I’ve never been one to easily discern playwrights, but this stage is certainly enjoyable.

Something unique prevails in the narratives of the Mayflower and Plymouth Co. Rabble-rousers in the historical debate discern in this moment either a religious argument for America, or a contemptuous vision of a colonizing nation in the making. Both take the views of two disparate people in 1620: a radical Separatist, and an emigrant zealous for power. As with our modern populus, many great people resounded between.

This well-known tale, as it’s written here, is far more ebb and flow than the Disney adaptation—it’s the original author’s pen.

The capricious Pinocchio persistently rushes into trouble to satisfy every curious whim and is saved by the graces of others. Certainly, its prose is targeted to the young, but its contents of moral development are sterling. This is truly a gift to read to your children.

Not sure what “Status Update” is… but, if it is meant to establish what theme I am perusing then I will put it to use as such.

I am going through a reading list of New World and American history - namely, the development and ongoing experiment of the United States. Much of this is to alleviate the misgivings and confusion regarding the contempt for such a wonderful experiment. Book 5 of ~150.

This was such a good read I was falling over. I will resume when I get to this era in my readings of world history such that I grasp the culture and social effects of Marx and his critics.

This book can trample the spirits because of its difficulty and length. I will revisit when I can attend the focus and thought!

Reading this with my 6 year old has drastically slowed the process - though she loves it in comparison to the beloved Disney movie.

The book progresses in a back and forth between the colony/settlement affairs at Jamestown and the shipwrecked crew at Bermuda. There is at least an expectable cadence of the narrative from approx. 220 to 339. Stephen Hopkins is notable at this point in the narrative — reminiscent of a Wallace moment in Scotland — where his loneliness is prominent in his plea for liberty at Bermuda.

Persistently, the book detours back and forth, making it rather difficult to follow any sort of timeline. The content is great but severely disordered.

Eh… more so the construction of the narrative than the content itself is distracting. There are persistent timeline changes that feel more like tangents than a coloring of the narrative. Nothing is more cumbersome than reading a historical narrative that cannot keep to a clear timeline. The book doesn’t even include a timeline…
