also yup, unlikely to rate this book 3 stars or higher: it provides the barest minimum of mystery and thrill to keep me enticed, but i swear i feel the urge to just skim through everything

then again... with 100 pages left, i don't see much of a point in doing so 🤷‍♀️

have a feeling i will enjoy the movie more than i do the book. i'm literally only staying for the plot at the moment ;-; absolutely not interested in these characters, and the writing doesn't feel anything special to me (and seriously, why do rachel and anna have basically identical writing styles for their... thoughts? diary entries?? idk).

i'll be honest that i am a little disappointed that megan and rachel's pov so far feel like... carbon copies of each other. i can barely distinguish them and their thoughts save for the people they surround themselves with.

can't believe i kept overlooking everything blood-related (from mama's miscarriage to kambili being unable to concentrate on her studies to her breaking the eucharistic fast because she needed to eat before taking a panadol).

definitely remembered the mini debate i had with my teacher during a consult over papa's timetabling and need to control and have order in everything, and googling mmuo for the first time.

feels fitting to touch this book for the first time since i studied it for lit (which is actually 4 years ago? i truly can't believe it) on a palm sunday.

...so yes, here i am, re-reading this. definitely more than my third time seeing this pink cover and getting nightmares over it, but it's the second time i will be reading it cover-to-cover without a teacher breathing down my neck on how to feel about it.

Now wishing I had said something along these lines when my KI teacher asked us last year about our type. And while it was just a lesson on subjectivity influencing NACOK, I was one of the only people who said looks aren't my deciding factor ;-;

A tiny part of me was uncomfortable with that. Like, before I straightened my hair and put on a cookie-cutter outfit, he couldn't understand how Wes could be interested in me? When I looked the way I liked looking, it was inconceivable to him that Wes would find me attractive? That kind of stung.

omg please listen to yourself, liz! because that is indeed a glaring red flag about him.

oh my days, my younger self was so dumb to not have fallen head over heels for wes, because i can now count on one hand the number of males i've interacted with who are even half as thoughtful as he is.

probably an indication that he was raised right. and... this is perhaps a sign ifor me to ensure my younger brother grows up with some of the emotional intelligence and maturity this fictional man possesses.

I swear this book isn't good for my heart. I don't believe it has stopped beating at that unnatural, hummingbird-quick pace that has started since last night. And the mild jump scares I keep getting every other page are NOT helping.

And holy shit, the amount of foreshadowing in this series is genuinely no joke. I'm now wondering if the author had made her own murder board or something to connect everything throughout the series before she set out to write everything.
