I congratulate you, my dear fellow. In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it. The last is much the worst; the last is a real tragedy!

Now, my dear Tuppy, don’t be led astray into the paths of virtue. Reformed, you would be perfectly tedious. That is the worst of women. They always want one to be good. And if we are good, when they meet us, they don’t love us at all. They like to find us quite irretrievably bad, and to leave us quite unattractively good.

Act 1 is so fun! eg:

It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious.

Are all men bad? >> Oh, all of them, my dear, all of them, without any exception. And they never grow any better. Men become old, but they never become good.

Intrigued by the writing, frustrated by the dialogue, feeling irrevocably beyond the time in my life when a story like this would have been palatable. DNF

The worst writing since the Hunger Games, and it’s not even YA. DNF :(

Finished Mencius

(Reading out of order) finished the analects

Loving this

I can’t stand this book. If the only way to get people to care about trees is to analogize them to humans, we are doomed. The constant anthropomorphization buries the rare, actually interesting tidbit about trees underneath a barrage of childish fluff.

Listening to the audiobook on long drives. Easy to stay awake with this eye opening account of American history!! I’m shocked by how much I’m learning about the early years (ok let’s be real, first century and a half) of this country. Feels like this should be required reading in schools
