Let me be this thankful. The author’s grandmother spent a year hospitalized. “If she mourned the loss of an entire year of high school, my grandmother never mentioned it. Her unpublished memoir records the day she left the hospital on a stretcher. “I remember how beautiful the sky looked, and the white floating clouds, and the pure smell of fresh air as they put me into the ambulance, and I headed home.“

On experiencing the death of a loved one, “Now the old question and strong feelings- how the sun shines on, just the same, the house is just as lovely and comfortable, cars go by as usual, everyone goes on about their business, ‘but oh, the difference to me!’
