The whole voyage/Elephant Princess bit was so confusing I can't even tell if it's the writing or my reading skills that are lacking

I wish this book was way more detailed in its description of scenery and people and objects... such an interesting story but so much could be added with details

Really goofy writing style, I'm probably so not used to contemporary books but this is actually ridiculous. The story is alright though

The fact that the tiger is real makes the story so much more intriguing

So far this is way better than people describe it... really digging it. Also I love the way Maguire describes things, vaguely reminiscent of Joyce's storytelling. Surprisingly modernist

Frankie is finished with Me and White Supremacy: How to Recognise Your Privilege, Combat Racism and Change the World
There is always something so profoundly interesting to me about books of this sort as someone who is white passing but also not "White" re the hegemonic cultural power group. I find that books of this sort divide the world in a White/BIPOC duality in which I find no place for myself. I'll write a full review but there is something in these antiracism workbooks that really breaks my brain

I don't get how this work is so revered I really don't. It's whiny and absolutist and really not what an academic work should be. All Said has done so far is just whine about west=bad but I can name, off the top of my head, refutations for each of his "the West has always......" arguments. This is not very rigorous. Still I persevere. I want to see what the hype is about.

This is such an interesting perspective... I don't know if I agree... But it is interesting for sure...

Every interviewee in this book except for Nicholas Serota and Fiona Hobbs are actually insufferable. Curious how that insufferableness-to-tolerableness ratio changes (if it does) in later chapters.

The content is interesting but I really can't stand her writing style. I have severe gripes with the 'fictionification' of non-fiction, particularly ethnographic research (which this book kind of is, even if not in the classic sense). It makes everything feel terribly sensationalised (perhaps it isn't, but the *style* sure gives that impression), it really does cheapen any expert opinion, even if valuable.

I have to ask myself why anyone even bothered in the Dark Academia subgenre after the release of this. Honestly, why delude oneself in thinking it can be surpassed?

Painfully boring and confusing stuff but also very compulsive? The story itself is interesting, but the way it is written is an actual nightmare

This book is written in a way that makes me think I genuinely can't read, but listening to the audiobook while I read helps a lot. The rape scene was AWFUL and I bet worse stuff is coming still. Idk how I feel abt this but I'll continue on. For now.

I don't know how to feel about what's happening in this book yet because after TDR it feels like the plot is progressing super mega slowly but I am enjoying the Daji flashbacks/pre-TPW lore drops a lot I hope there's more of them

re-reading this right now because I remembered how much I liked it when I was 18 and the writing is kinda... bad? Like I am still interested enough in the story to want to re-read this and even read the next two books of the trilogy but it is so obvious this is a debut wow. This is like YA but with crazy detailed military jargon making it so obvious what Kuang's knowledge was in. Definitely not in writing quality...
