Unbelievably readable prose; blink and fifteen pages go by. No wonder the television series adaptation was so successful: the chapters are structured just like scenes in a script, with dialogue, physical actions, tension building, mystery, and cliffhangers being the most essential elements. Some strong similes scattered hither and thither also.

I had assumed it would not read particularly autobiographically since it's a collation of writings pertaining to his life from his own hand rather than a solid piece devised to be an autobiography, but so far it feels surprisingly true to the form. He is endearing from the first.

Bloom's love of Shakespeare is so infectious I immediately went and reread Hamlet. The secular scripture, indeed.
