It’s alright. Story is interesting but pacing could be improved. Chapter 2 felt like several different chapters pushed together and rushed. As the story so far is supposed to have happened over several days it would have been nice to have seen each day/event expanded on instead of shown for 2-4 paragraphs and then moved on from.

Not terrible, feels pretty rushed though. Sorta just going “Oh? Okay. I guess this is happening now.” the entire time. Can’t really get a feel for who the character is so far. Has lots of potential though and I’m hoping for a reason to actually care about Violet other than “she’s the main character” because like… who IS she?

Writing feels very flat. Characters aren’t very likeable.

No indication on the physical book that this is book 2 of a series, so I’m trying to be kinder about the plot because I haven’t read book 1, but its so cliche I really don’t feel like I NEED to go back and read book 1; all mentions to it seem to imply an extremely generic plot build.

Huge shame, as I enjoyed Beast Quest as a kid.

Pages 25 and 26 are exceptionally adorable

???? Why are they SITTING there. 3 pages ago they were talking about how urgently they had to leave before the BBEG showed up. Now they’re just sitting there eating cheese, seemingly forgetting that they themselves, and not just the reader, have the knowledge that the villain is on the way???

God the fatphobia is actually getting unbearable at this point. All the nasty characters are overweight. We get it. Shut up about it for 5 minutes and focus on something more important

94 pages in and its got the first act of affection between any of the characters. Up until now its been pretty nasty attitudes, imo

So far it feels very mean-spirited. Nobody in the book likes each other, the author takes any opportunity to mock the characters, and they generally just don’t have any traits to encourage you to like them. The only fat character is “ugly and mean and gross.” And the narration switches between POV characters haphazardly, going through 2-4 characters’ internal dialogue in a single scene.
