had friends visiting over the weekend, so didn't read as much as i normally would, but an incredibly worthwhile trade. went to the beach and gave a tour of my fine city.
also need to get my hands on a copy of project hail mary at some point, want to read it soon because my boyfriend would like to watch it with me (he has already seen it once) and i have to read it first

a friend got me this for my birthday last year, and another friend is very fond of the book, but i never did get around to reading it. better late than never.

the most horrifying thing about this book is that it is based on a true story. and when i looked up the name of the woman who inspired luciana, elena milagro de hoyos, every single search result was the name of the man who desecrated her corpse, and sensationalist articles about the 'real life corpse bride'. i wish that were more surprising.

i am not a particularly squeamish person. ive read american psycho several times and used to watch hannibal while eating dinner. but i was not prepared for the semi-graphic on-page depiction of a diy abortion via small needle. this fictional teenager is considerably braver than i am

discovered my old secondary school and sixth form is currently under lockdown because a girl was stabbed. it's never been a great school (minor acts of violence while i was there. the gun lockdown. history of racism. and the murder) but fucking hell. glad i am not there anymore. poor kid

there was no chance of me seeing a book called 'eaters of the dead' and not buying it immediately. though i do wish the copy i found had the same cover as this goodreads edition. big fan of saturn devouring his son. i even have some socks with him on them

ive started to read nightblood's dialogue in stephen fry's voice, and i think it has significantly improved my quality of life. he, too, can destroy evil, as all true norwich folk eventually must

brandon sanderson casually dropping the canon existence of shapeshifting dragons in the cosmere and then moving on like nothing happened. meanwhile kaladin is neutralising immortals through the power of song. strange book, this one

why is the entire cosmere hanging around on roshar. we've got feruchemists, seons, several references to warbreaker (which i still have not read), whatever iyatil's got going on, hoid, and also kelsier is here. a moment of silence for any stormlight fans who havent read anything else branderson has written, because this book would be utterly incomprehensible

what do you mean there are another six hundred pages standing between me and the end of this book. there was a time when i could plough through a stormlight novel in a week (well. words of radiance. the best of them all), but that time has most certainly passed. if i play my cards right i can finish this at the weekend, but i kind of doubt it

halfway through, feeling conflicted. every other book in this series has had a Scene. one that has stuck with me all these years, and really encapsulates the spirit of these novels & the heart that has gone into them. i dont know that i have found that spirit here, yet. i hope i do, and there are another seven hundred pages left

did they just treat moash to the rosharan equivalent of hemalurgy. there's something very reminiscent of the steel inquisitors there except with spikes of crystal rather than metal.

every so often i remember that it is entirely possible to trace my interest in the cosmere back to my twelve year old self deciding to watch a random youtuber play a randomised nuzlocke of pokemon alpha sapphire. he mentioned the way of kings in a video of his five or six years later, i added it to my goodreads tbr, and the rest was history

in my second week at this job i was told about the roman village + bathhouse they found during onshore construction. finally allowed to talk about it publicly after spending the past two days telling kids and parents about it at the science festival. fifty roman artefacts soon to be donated to the museum (:

szeth has always reminded me of holland, and kaladin has often reminded me of kell. and now we get the two of them sent to szeth's homeland together and forced into prolonged close proximity. welcome back kellholland

i know there have been a lot of jokes in the cosmere fandom about kaladin being roshar's first therapist, but im not sure how to feel about branderson making that his primary character trait in this book so far. or the therapy speak about his and shallan's 'individual neuroses would feed off one another in dangerous ways'. bring back my boy

'if hope doesnt mean anything to you when you lose, then it wasnt ever a virtue in the first place. it took me a long time to learn that, and i finally did so from the writings of a man who lost every belief he thought he had, then started over new'
'sounds like someone wise,' syl said
'oh, sazed is among the best. hope i get to meet him someday'

justice for genesis because if i had been blamed for someone's death while grieving and also fucked by a thirty (ish) year old shortly after turning eighteen i would be losing my mind. let her be angry again. please

picked this up expecting something more along the lines of sequoia nagamatsu's how high we go in the dark, an assumption which proved way off the mark. still a good book, and genuinely insightful, but not the story i was expecting. that tends to be the case when i buy books knowing nothing about them, but i quite enjoy doing so and intend to continue

it has been far too long since i was this immersed in a fantasy novel (rereads notwithstanding). james islington continues to give me what i need most. and i was right in my prediction that the setup in book one would allow this book to shine in the ways licanius did

sick and twisted that the weekend is so short and the work week so long. my job is somewhat more interesting now that we have cfd (big win for norfolk vanguard offshore wind farms) but it pales in comparison to reading and writing time
