echoes are a fairly significant part of the earlier chapters in this book, and there's a line about daisy asking her father to play 'always', which is an echo of 'hallways' + the whole expanding house with mysterious hallways and rooms situation. anyway im listening to fdc's new album and six shot morning has an echoing 'always' throughout the bridge and it made me think about this damned book a lot. theres no escape

had this on my desk in the office yesterday so i could read on my lunch break, and my colleagues like to compare what everyone's currently reading, so one asked about this and had a flick through + read the reviews on the blurb. in her words, 'it's a far cry from a court of thorns and roses'.

i bought the remastered full-colour edition of this while in sweden back in july with the intention of getting the full house of leaves experience on reread. going to annotate and all that. it's almost halloween and i am in a suboptimal mental state, so now is arguably the best time for it

bought this back in late feb/early march without realising it was the third book in a series, hence leaving it untouched for so long so i could acquire and read the morning star & wolves of eternity. im hoping this will be the best of the three, and it has started stronger than the last book did. plus it is suitably eerie for an early october read before i ruin my life by rereading house of leaves

forensic anthropology has been a pet interest of mine for a while now courtesy of hit tv series bones, and i quite enjoyed sue black's 'hidden in bone' when i read it a few years ago. plus alexa hagerty's 'still life with bones' is one of my favourite pieces of non fiction. not sure how i feel about this one though. it says 'part science, part memoir' but means heavily towards the latter, while i prefer the former

im generally sceptical of essays on writing and advice on how best to go about it, because writing is such a unique, individual experience and there's no single approach that can suit everyone. that being said, i like the way this is written, and there are some nice passages to ponder

i said it when threads came out, and i will say it again now: ve schwab knows how to write a book that feels like coming home. these characters mean so very much to me. second only to the antari trio and one caeden licanius/tal'kamar deshrel

when ve schwab shared the teaser introducing gabriel gray, i couldnt help but wonder if it was a nod to nbc heroes, where it's the real name of sylar, the primary antagonist. i still stand by my belief that sylar's power would make for an incredible villains series antagonist, though i dont think it is likely. intuitive aptitude would be massively overpowered

my preorder did arrive early, and unfortunately i lack the willpower to wait until the sixth of october. been waiting almost six years for this

i finally got around to preordering victorious yesterday and waterstones emailed to say that my order has been dispatched. apparently it's due to arrive tomorrow. i wont complain if it somehow arrives early, especially after the great threads preorder debacle of 2023, but i am slightly confused

had to go to london for work yesterday, which meant getting up at twenty past five to catch a train. train was cancelled and ended up getting a later one. anyway, was reading on the train and there was a scene where alevtina was on a long train journey and had a nap and i think that mustve made me realise how exhausted i was because i put the book down and had a very disjointed sleep. it did not help me

'i think youve come to the wrong place. the philosophy department is across campus. or perhaps you study religion? we do science here.' reminds me of that time in first year when people from the christian society were trying to encourage my coursemates into their marquee to discuss theology or some such and my ecology lecturer came along and said 'and for everyone who wants to learn about evolution, come right in'

still fighting my way through syvert's pov, only about sixty pages to go. i read a glowing review for this book that said they really disliked syvert's section but it was worth it for the second half, which blew them away with its quality and the themes, so i am curious to see whether i feel the same way

every time crime and punishment is mentioned i start thinking about how much i need to reread that book. unfortunately it is one of ~10 books that i really want to reread and i have another twelve or so unread books on my shelf. dostoevysky i promise i will return to you one day

definitely preferring the morning star to this one, here we still have a flawed pov character and the characters are all written to be realistic but i just dislike syvert. which may be the point, and i may get over it. however he is just an obnoxious conservative nineteen year old who gets mad at his mum for asking him to help out around the house

this book's got me researching norwegian politics. syvert's political alignment is pretty damn obvious in the text but i was curious as to just how right wing the progress party are (very. like norwegian reform) and whether the politicians being named were real politicians from the 80s (they are)

technically i told myself i wouldnt buy any new books until i had less than five unread books on my shelf, but then i saw world of books had a couple books ive really wanted to read in stock for decent prices and that i had a discount code in my inbox. got three books for £26 so really cannot complain

i shouldn't be surprised that the book about a protest features long and detailed depictions of casual police brutality. it wouldn't be so frustrating to read if it weren't so real

this was an impulse purchase a while back because of one of my favourite folk punk songs. the book was named after a print made by a friend of pat the bunny, who named a song after it, and it means a lot to me. so i hope this book lives up to it. also the second time i bought a book because of a pat the bunny song. the first one being the dispossessed, which is a masterpiece

the characters in this book would make a great cast for a monster of the week style tv programme

this is quite entertaining now that ive adapted to the narrative style and there arent quite so many penis references. there was even a kraken

there are good parts of this, but im not a fan of the humour. i get that kinch is a horny, cocky, and silly twenty-three year old, and sometimes the way that comes through in the narration works well, but there are only so many scat jokes and sexualised depictions of women and references to the hung stag god that i can take
