there's an indie bookshop in norwich that sells paperback classics for £3.99 each (and hardbacks for £10.99 each), so i decided to pick this up this morning, as i have a student who wants lessons on macbeth but i haven't actually read it for five and a half years. back in my gcses days. it makes a lot more sense when you're not fifteen, i have to say

one of my tuition students is in year nine, and im planning on assigning 'homework' that is just to try and read a chapter or two of a book each day. does anyone have suggestions for books i could recommend that are suitable for thirteen/fourteen year olds? i dont know what's popular amongst young people at the moment and have very few books i can recommend to someone that age in good conscience

completely unrelated to the book. sitting on the sofa thinking about vampires (friends made me watched blade last night. vampirism is on my mind) and had the delightful thought of a world in which sabine could meet astrid dane. sabine would enjoy a bone floor and astrid cutting a man's lips off. and i think they could be utterly awful together

working my way through this rather slowly, partly because i have been rather busy the past few days but mostly because the content makes this a book i do not want to rush through. very important but also incredibly harrowing at times

the plot has picked up a little now, but the characters. i am a character-driven reader. i want to be able to pick apart a character's beliefs and motivations and little ideosyncracies. i care a lot about plot, of course, but i struggle to care about the plot and grow curious when the characters are one-dimensional. and, well, there is potential for intrigue, but nobody lives up to it. at least not yet

there was another woman. however her fifty pages of existence could be summed up with 'she lived. she served cunt. she died'. could have been a rather fascinating character, but alas. it was not to be.

there's a sweet little speech from kuni about respecting women, and yet there are only two named female characters so far: an old tavern owner who has had maybe five lines of dialogue, and kuni's wife who has had precious little page time on account of being pregnant. ken, you can do better than this. surely you can do better than this.

enjoying the concept of this book but it is difficult to immerse myself in when it keeps jumping between perspectives. if it were just a handful of characters, fair enough, but there have been at least seven povs (not counting the gods) in less than two hundred pages. which means there isnt enough time to really get to know the characters or begin to care about them. plus the random mid-chapter pov switches.

finished writing the first draft of the first chapter of my novel. turned three a4 pages of outline into almost twenty a5 pages of vague words. beginning to think that drafting by hand was not my finest idea but i refuse to turn back now
