Hella Haasse warped me back in time, a time when the Dutch East Indies was the factory of luxury in the western world. That world and its (forced) allegiance of cultures ceased to exist, but the archipelago including Java’s mystic lands and mountain ranges are still there. The book reminds me of my visit to Indonesia, and the stories of my old grand-uncle, who was part of that past colonial world. Thanks Hella!
