WELL, THAT TURNED ON A DIME, DIDN’T IT?

Took me until page 115 to decide that the main character is truly and irredeemably evil.

While beautiful and mesmerizing in its complexity, it is abundantly clear that this novel is the start of something, and it barely forms a discrete unit on its own despite its hefty page length. I'll buy anything Danielewski writes, and I already own the next two in the series, so there's no stopping now. Looking forward to what's next.
