I'm puzzled that Phryne is now Jade Lady to Lin Chung, when she's been Silver Lady up until now. Seems like an editing mistake.

So far, this is a satire on bureaucracy, like the circumlocution office from Dickens.

And Miss Marple has finally entered the fray.

Ine of the odder Marple's, mainly because 50% in and the lady herself hasn't even been mentioned, letcslone put in an appearance.

Boy is McQuaid an A**hole in this one.

Oh dear. Thus far I'm not sure there's a single character I like.

I really wis Merry woud sack her b**ch of an assistant.

On the positive side, there may now be a second character I care about. On the negative, I'm coming to really detest the main character.

At this point, I still have no idea why this counts as fantasy. Thus far it seems to be straight historical fiction, and miserable with it. I think there's been one character I actually gave a damn about so far.

Not sure why, but I'm struggling far more with this one than with A Memory Called Empire (which I really liked). This is just hard work.

Oh, thank goodness. The romance has finally stopped dancing around. Maybe now we'll get back to the plot

Plus, the way the "romance" is being handled is actually cringeworthy in places.

Page 1143. Yess, the sewer chapter! I actually thought it was less tedious than previous discussions of gamins and convents.

Page 1051. Into the final stretch. Woohoo!

Page 887. Sadly, after a solid chunk of the actual story, we're back off on a diversion - this time on the origin of slang.

And I still haven't reached the "infamous sewer chapter"!

Still going. I wish there were fewer digressions.

I begin to understand why this book is so long. Having got back to the plot for a bit after Waterloo, I've just struggled through a massive digression on convents, but I think I've finally found the story again.

Waterloo as told by the French. That was an interesting 50pg digression from the actual plot.

Finished part one (Fantine) yesterday. Not quite sure why part two (Cossette) starts with a long and detailed digression on the Battle of Waterloo.

End of part one, and I'm finding it really hard to click with this book.

Unexpected, but enjoyable so far

Well, I'd always thought this was about the 1789 French Revolution. Actually, it's the later one.

Reading this I'm amazed at how relevent it also is to a certain Misogynistic Orange Psycopath.

This feels less of a satire and more of a horror story. But perhaps that's because despite being written in 1935, as a reaction to events in Germany, it's scarily accurate for the last five years as far as "populist demogogue becomes president and things go to Hell in a handbasket" is concerned.

I'm struggling with this somewhat. Not sure I'm convinced by either Gideon or Harrow.

If I wasn't reading this for a challenge, i'd probably give up. Not because its bad - it isn't, and it's well written - but it's making me so angry.

Okay, I'll admit it. I may be the only person in the world to say this, but I'm not enjoying it. Great premise, but too long and drawn out.

Loving the return to uber-geekiness.
