I just finished "Yorkville". A good read but one dependent on knowledge of the period depicted. I initially started reading it because, though not that central to the story, the neighborhood of Yorkville in New York is where my mother was born and in which she grew up.

Had no idea Steinbeck harbored prejudice against Jewish people...

More than a regular mystery, the protagonist is set up with Clarence Darrow to do the infamous Massey case in Oahu of the Thirties.
