Maybe it's just the audiobook, but I find this book way cheesier than the last one (though, so far devoid of unaddressed sexual assault).

I feel like the characters’ reputations are half developed. Public image becomes important to save them but the characters don’t wonder about certain footage being leaked, or generally the consequences of their actions. If they live by the public eye they need to think about it at least a little. If they live by the strategists will they need to worry about that too. It doesn’t factor into decisions enough.

This book is so intensely eye for an eye. That’s not how I think at all, so it’s hard to watch the story give the main characters the moral high ground it clearly wants them to have.

I had hoped that the Hunduns were revealed to not actually be evil, and that there’s a military conspiracy to hunt them down and use them for better weapons, but I’m worried that isn’t going to happen.

Noooo she’s not going to fall in love with the evil pilot, is she? I just feel like if pilots are the peak metaphor for men who use and throw away women, how do you justify redeeming and romanticizing one? But Yang Guang is getting the sexy YA love interest description… I hope that there’s a plot twist and it’s not him.

Super interesting. The style is a little unpolished but the ideas and characters are so so interesting. It’s very forward and strong with its messaging about the role of women, but I don’t think it has to be more subtle—it’s cathartic. Also, this book is proof (along with Legendborn) that diverse writers are needed for fantasy because they bring a new perspective.

The toxic urge to tell Britta Lundin the horrors her book has inflicted upon my mind.

I don't think I have ever hated a character more than I hate Claire from "Ship It" by Britta Lundin. She's the MC and she's like..... actually disturbed.

"Ship It" is the only book against queerbaiting that queerbaits. The way Forest talks about Rica (and men in general) REEKS of repressed homosexuality.

It sucks because I don't want Forest to be gay; I don't think it would make the book better. But every time Forest mentions Rico, he talks about his smile, his kindness, how cool he is, etc. Come on.

If she marries Benedict I will... idk, cry, or throw something. But I also do want Benedict to marry a cute artistically minded lass. Also, I want him to develop some class consciousness.

This book has VERY strong Howl's Moving Castle vibes. I loved the first one, but I think this... gels better, somehow?

This book is kind of anti-toxic masculinity? The book shows Lauscher's use of power at Gila's house as a bad thing. And, even though he was enchanted, people still give him some of the fault for his actions. I think that instead of growing into a more fighting-ready, classically masculine hero, he might grow into a better listener, and a more empathetic person (Arnie/Hunli dichotomy).

Uh... are we sure Ulysses isn't a longform poem? People call it a novel but it's so heavy on imagery and rhythm that it feels like the modern version of an epic poem. It is based on the Odyssey.... I mean....

I've been reading the Heroes of Olympus series with my younger sib lately, and I honestly don't think it has the same charm as the original Percy Jackson series. I remember that the series improves past book 2. This is because once they're all reunited, the boring characters take a back seat instead of being Integral to the Main Trio (fite me). Percy's snarky voice is also worse in 3rd person. He doesn't sound right!

i am... really enjoying ao haru ride! i thought it'd just be ok, but im kinda getting into it... i also like the author's note in the first volume that talks about how man can be as catty & jealous as women.

Villette is now my favorite book, I think. My God.

I'm annoyed that Wolf's first reaction to Scarlet being gone is to *try to kill Cinder*? Like... yes, she's the crux of their entire mission, but also, weren't they friends? Weren't they buds? Hello? Does that connection mean *nothing*? Is Wolf's self-control that thin? Like.......... murder? MURDER???

He should not be let off the hook for that, imo.
