You know this book is old school when it takes 800 pages for ninja to show up and the author feels it is necessary to explain what a shruriken is... with a whole paragraph.

It certainly has drawn me in what with the intrigue and exotic world whatnot.

I can certainly understand the author's reasoning g for using TEKS but since I'm from California would prefer something written in Ca State Standards. I saw that it had references to my Standards in the back but I want more. Or tester yet Common Core standards.

This book started a little slow (but with written with wit) and I guess I wouldn't say it really speeds up but it certainly stays fresh and grows very powerful.

I'm constantly looking for foreshadowing. But not the foreshadowing of outside events, like a bird flying into a building meaning the same thing will happen to the characters. Rather the kind of foreshadowing of how the character of a character will play out.

Hazel is, so far, a blank slate of cynical teen-ness with cancer. I don't know what Augustus sees in her... but I also don't know what he's like yet either.

I also skipped the history of the covent.

I like the "About the Authors" it simply says "They are teachers."
