Jagger had poured a great deal of himself into the memorial. For six months after the unveiling he was completely exhausted and unable to work. The lack of professional recognition, and the powerful but confused response in the Press, caused Jagger considerable distress.

I'm not actually reading this book. It's had to give way to Charles Sergeant Jagger.

The Paddington station commission gave Jagger his first public presence in London and partly because of its accessibility, but also because of its departure from the banal pattern of many memorials, Soldier Reading a Letter became one of his most highly regarded works.
