Good prose but so far an unimpressive story…

Apart from the occasional stilted dialogue, so far so good!

So far so good, although already getting a sense the story doesn’t, frustratingly, really move the needle in terms of the wider HH narrative (a passing mention of the delivery of Vulkan to Deathfire and the Death Guard being the only tie-in to Deathfire, the novel).

Final stretch of the story a bit disappointing, final battle(s) seem rushed (particularly on the surface of Nocturne), intervention of Nocturne's wildlife is frankly a little gimmicky, the Death Guard seem a little pointless and stereotyped (their main purpose apparently being to create symmetry vs Istvaan V, where they faced the Salamanders too).

Surprisingly good! Finding the story evocative and immersive, and the cadence of the story just right.

So far, surprisingly good -
Numeon gets picked up by Word Bearers and tortured, but Vulkan’s sigil he carries around is actually also a beacon and that leads Aeonid Thiel and the Red-Marked, who are clearing out the outer reaches of Ultramar of traitors, to him. He gets rescued, taken to Maccrage, and reunited with the Salamanders there. Bit of silly business with Vulkan suddenly teleporting out of his casket…

So far so interesting…

It’s okay. The Word Bearers are being comic book villains again (the priest), while the trials of the primarch are getting a bit overdone. The description of Istvaan is also a bit over-detailed but broadly entertaining.

So far pretty good, though (some of) the bad guys are being stereotypically cartoonish...
