The Famished Road is quite profound and spiritual at times but (and this feels churlish to say) exhausting to read. But it is certainly well worth it if you put in the effort.

The case against Lucy Letby is almost entirely based on scientific evidence and the unlikely coincidence; when she is on shift babies seem to die and when she is away they seem to live. Is she a victim of a miscarriage of justice as nothing we know about her background suggests she would become a killer? So why doesn't she look like a victim of a miscarriage either? This excellent book provides a few more clues.

Thoroughly absorbing about how western society lacks a sense of belonging and community for many people especially men and how war seems to provide it. One minor criticism was that he does not look at many of the advantages of western countries outlined in Joseph Heinrich’s book the weirdest people in the world:how the west became psychologically peculiar and particularly prosperous. But that’s a minor criticism.
