I first heard about the camps satellite photos on facebook in 2017. In 2019 we had a bachelor student intern whose family lived in Xinjiang. Once at lunch some Dutch colleagues asked her about the camps. I don’t remember her answer, but I remember she was vague about it and thought it was just boring brainwashing study camp, nothing too bad. She was Han, her family was not the target.

What intrigued me to pick up this book is that I was surprised to find several Xinjiang restaurants run by Uyghurs who spoke only a little mandarin in the Netherlands, and in Coimbra, Portugal.

Finally getting better. The first 50% of the book should have been at least halved.

On the edge of DNF… the dialogues are repetitive and childish… the protagonists are in their early 30s/mid 30s, but it reads like they are 21/22.
There are so many things to talk about on the topics of critics and writing and publishing. Why they forever fixate on the first few text and verbal exchanges. Get a life!
