The memoir didn’t shy away from the brutal realities they were facing from the beginning. They shared their experiences of living alone, getting to know each other, house hunting house renovation, financial risks, debt, move in, adjusting to each other’s life style, etc.
And you can get a peek of their apartment on Kim Hana’s instagram! And their cats!

While reading it on and off, I almost forgot it was a memoir and thought it was a novel. Being a memoir makes it even more interesting.

No-brainer ridiculous office gossips to listen to while cycling

The audiobook is very good. Didn’t expect the author to present such a good overview of the east/southeastern Asian (immigrant) family dynamics in America (which is not far from how it is in their homeland).

The long chapter of the backstory of the girl nicknamed Panda 熊猫 is very out of place. 为赋新词强说愁。But the rest is pretty good.

In Chinese the verbs don’t have different formats for different tenses. In this book it is sometimes very confusing. Because the author mixed current story with memories and side stories, often without any bridge in between.

Holistic and nonjudgmental depiction of people’s day to day life in turmoil.
Luckily my understanding of Cantonese is sufficient. Still, more effort to read this book than the English ones.

Story of my life on reversed roles: Nate with limited knowledge of standard Mandarin trying to follow Keru and her parents’ conversations in Chinese dialect. 🤣

Instead of a vague statement such as “I am hired to solve problems”, like most memoirs about big tech companies typically do, Kristi Coulter offers detailed descriptions of the specific issues. It was surprising to see Amazon internal technical infrastructure and management back in early 2000s was such a mess.

Audiobook

Spotify recommended the audiobook to me. However I checked out the ebook preview instead. The opening pages are quite fun to read. There are sarcastic and realistic depictions of people bored of their meaningless corporation jobs.

Started this book because I liked the cover. Luckily the writing is also good! Brings me back to my student time!

Being familiar to the relevant technologies means the side stories are a bit boring to me. But the discussions on AI morality are so well written, in very easy to understand languages

Everyone I followed on Goodreads who has read this book rated it 5 stars. Must be really good.
