I am reading this with two friends. It all online and fun.

Reading in translation by Ann Goldstein

I am reading the edition with the Slaters as translators.

Second book this year with former policeman retiring to rural Ireland to forget and then get dragged back into the past!!! Other was The Searcher by Tana French.

I am reading about all the negativity here. If you want to book review, I suggest you go to a publication you respect. I’m nixing reviews as a part of my presence here -though I am well aware that I am not an influencer! I started on Goodreads because I wanted to keep up with the books that I’ve read and maybe find friends who read the same. That’s how I’ll continue.

Let me add, the book is itself a pretty one. The cover borrowed from a book by Anne Reeve Aldrich - a 19th century poet who died young. However she walked this earth for a while at the same time as Emily Dickinson.

The title!!! However, it is enough of a sprightly read to keep me going for now. Clocking in at 240 odd pages makes it likely I will finish this.

Think it’s time for a break from Elly Griffiths’s mysteries. They accompanied me through the holidays which was jolly. This last one had a fine ending. If you read serious fiction, you can take a pleasant break with these books as I have.

Green provides a pronunciation guide in the dialogue lest we forget these white people are southern: suh-viiived, sooo-glayyy-uddd. But I did see my damn spelled as others tell me I say it : da-uuum.

There is a panoply of characters - he takes on a young Black girl with lesbian moms- that’s a white guy sticking his neck out - and a wise dog which doesn’t talk - well, not yet, but knows good people when he sees them. The doyenne of Suh-vaaan-nuh- has the name Morgana to give us a clue or throw us off the scent? - I’m watching the dog.

Madame de Pompadour by Nancy Mitford! How I learned of this I can’t remember, but so far it is entertaining.
One dark note - the miscarriages, the death of babies and children are terrible. I do not know how women coped with so many pregnancies and so much loss.

I seem to be contradicting myself wanting more twists but not liking the rollercoaster. Maybe I feel too safe - not feeling as if I am going to be flung from my seat!

Maybe the problem is the rollercoaster narrative other reviewers have admired. 🤔

I’ve read three of Boyd’s books and loved them but here, I’ve waited for something - more wit, more twists?

To cut a long story short, Bloom, grasping the situation, was the first to rise to his feet…………..

Reading the difficult and hallucinatory Circe. Just going with the flow as Joyce exercises his verbal chops.
