Two chapters in and my eyes are crossing. Does this book get better? I barely understand what's going on between the needlessly wordy descriptions and the (so-far) flat characters. This is an award-winner apparently, so I'll try to muscle on. I don't DNF, anyway...I just hope it doesn't take me 10 months like Battlefield Earth did.

Here we go! I hope this is closer to "The Way of Shadows" instead of the two follow-ups, which were weaker by far. Starting out well, though.

"It's Kylar Stern. I'm here to kill you. Won't take but a minute." 😂

Mike is starting The Sixth Strand (A Pattern of Shadow & Light, #5)
Goodness...I just learned that the author of this series passed away over a year ago and that there were two more books of this series planned. Reading the rest of this one is going to hit different. While the story itself doesn't reach the heights of The Wheel of Time (for which the last 3 books of the 14-novel saga was completed after the Robert Jordan's passing), large portions were great escapism.

Mike is on page 190 of 480 of All About Me!: My Remarkable Life in Show Business
"The Producers" was my first skirmish with Adolf Hitler...Most people got the joke...I did get almost a hundred letters from rabbis, students...Jewish organizations who were very angry with me. I wrote back to every single one and tried to explain to them that the way you bring down Hitler and his ideology is not by getting on a soapbox with him, but if you can reduce him to something laughable, you win.

Mike is on page 20 of 288 of Last Team Standing: How the Steelers and the Eagles-- The ""Steagles""--Saved Pro Football During World War II
Somehow, I didn't know that the Steelers had gone by the "Iron Men" for a few months (though never played a game as them). I knew they were the "Pirates" for their first few seasons, but never the Iron Men...nor did I know that George Preston Marshall was pretty much directly responsible for keeping the Pirates/Iron Men/Steelers in Pittsburgh when they may very well have moved to Boston in the early 40s.

I feel really bad that I think this book is boring. I'm not a DNF'er though, but it's taken me an inordinately long time to slog through this... I'm just not smart enough to get Lewis' references for the satire to really sing.

Mike is on page 62 of 330 of The Pioneers: The Heroic Story of the Settlers Who Brought the American Ideal West
So not long after finishing a book that describes the native side of the whites settling of Ohio and the nearby territories, I'm reading a work from the settlers' side. This is going to create some interesting emotions.

This is sort of like watching "Titanic" and rooting for the boat not to sink. I'm a white dude living in Illinois pulling for the Shawnee to repel the settlers...
