This is fascinating - a compilation of diary entries in order of date, from Jan 1 to Dec 31; over the epochs. The first daily entry had entries from a roadside robbery in the 1650s, a card scandal in the 1800s, and a german composer speculating about where the trains were going in 1943... So I am going to read it day by day as it happens. If my commitment works it should take exactly one year to read this book!

There are gems of absolute wisdom and revelation but lots of 'when the Almopions crossed the Axios and met the Panaeabs, the Odomanti, the Droi, and the Derseans' type of detail that turn it too often into a slog. I am going to bail on it, appreciate it for what it is but life's to short to labour through meaningless details....

Going into my unfinished pile; read 100 pages and decided I wasn't going to get engaged. A vicious murder, lots of screeding (if that is a word) about the horror of the Argentine regime and disappearances, some racism, a missing person mystery, etc. I was dutiful in reading not appreciative, and so bailed.

Hmm unfortunately, this is one of those classics that did not foresee the digital revolution that was immediately at hand. It’s a little distaff to be 200 years in the future and have fax tech lol .

Paused so as to be able to read the short stories in their proper sequence. So far all have been excellent, with two GREAT short stories - one about the origin of Amos, one a bit of back story on a Protegen sociopath. Next short story takes place after Babylon's Ashes, so .. there I go.

I have just finished book one 'A Fire Upon the Deep', and it is definitely a 5-star experience. The universe is divided into zones, regions where different physical constraints allow very different technological and mental possibilities. An ancient disastrous evil power - The Blight - and our heroes must race through space to stop it.

was looking forward to this trilogy (finished his Aurora last month and loved it); but 100 pages in I am getting the strong feeling time and technology have eroded the story elements so gravely this may be more artifact than entertainment

Finished the 2nd book of this 4 volume omnibus, I am absolutely in love, this is why I love to read! Fantastic, great author, compelling, fascinating loving it 5 stars consistently through 2.5 books

4 book omnibus. Just finished Book 1 Wild Seed - 5 stars. holy moly how did I never find this. Awesome voice. Incredible story. super psyched to continue

This is an omnibus edition - the first 3 volumes of the series.
Book 1 - The Black Company.
Narrated by Croaker - the company doctor and Anna list (historian) - this is a terrific introduction to a group of mercenaries with a code - as they enter service with the Lady. It’s basically war - good v. evil - with our heroes in the hire of Darkness. Highly entertaining.

Who knew being a heartless killing machine would present so many moral dilemmas?

Another short book, another crackerjack adventure - it wastes no time, picking up exactly at the pause of the previous, and gains momentum until its explosive and cinematic finale, while building toward a future finale.
