Reads like a court room thriller. Fascinating account of a banking scandal.

Reading the Introduction right now. The book is older than I first thought, having been written during the years spanning the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th. Since publication in 1914 many people have been inspired by it.

DNF. Fascinating insight into Murdoch's life and work but more for dipping into rather reading cover to cover. Thought I'd better let the library have it back for someone else to enjoy.

Had to return to the library via Borrowbox. I completed the first book of the three. I will definitely come back for more.

The books in one. So far I have completed the first book, a tragi-comic road trip by early automobile. Or hero, Tomas, is barely functioning due to grief at the loss of his lover and their young son. Inspired by a quest for a religious artefact he has learned of in his studies as an antiquarian, he heads off alone into the hinterland in his uncle's car which he hardly knows how to control.

Eve Baker is reading Rest and Be Thankful
This book reminded me of Emma Donohue's The Pull of the Stars. The sheer relentless awfulness that the main character experiences as she tries to deal with sick babies and bereaved parents is harrowing. Yet it is a beautifully written book.

I have found this book interesting. It was selected by the local library. A fictionalised biography, I thought it would be good to read of Marlene Dietrich's career, which was even longer than I had thought. I shall look up some of her films.

Eve Baker is reading Where the Forest Meets the Stars
Superb! The author has a great talent. The last book I read was ok and as I read I wondered why it wasn't special. Then I turned to this one with no great expectations and I was blown away by the sensitivity of the writing, the evocation of the setting, the nature, and the feelings of the characters. Highly recommended.

My first Alison Lurie! Too bad I didn't know about until I heard she died. Loved this comedy of manners, the characters and complicated relationships.

This book never fails to engage me. Imagine Wind into Willows, Three Men in a Boat and Richard Hannah rolled into one! Unfortunately the Kindle edition I downloaded was not perfect with some typos. What I need is a good print edition with all the maps.

A fascinating historical novel in the guise of a contemporary account of a crime. Reminded me of those Jackdaw collections of facsimile historical documents.

Another great Sophie Allen story. This time Sophie and her team have a knotty case to unravel which leads them to high places. Just the right balance of procedural and personal.

Very powerful and moving. Scary to think how easily someone can be recruited and how our perception of people might be formed by media spin.
