I can feel the author getting better at writing characters but there’s so much fluff here just to make this a trilogy. I don’t like critiquing without receipts though so I’ll finish the series out of spite. If the third book misses all the build up and setting that 1st and 2nd book kept yapping about I’m going to be pretty upset lol

Better than last book for sure which I’m glad for, but it’s nothing to brag home about. Author can’t stop saying “emblazoned” every 2 pages, we get it. She keeps doing this thing where she’ll jump between times to probably “keep things intense” but as a reader it’s plain confusing. Also this should be a YA novel. More violence != adult fantasy novels. Good writing == adult fantasy novels.

The author sure does love using unnecessary ellipsis and em dashes. You could call it a writing style, but I consider it messy. Her editor should have said something but I guess no criticism allowed for the great SJM. Hoping it’s less obnoxious in the next book, if I don’t claw my eyes out before then

I wish the author would stop using footnotes/ asterisk to go on tangents. It’s an interesting tangent but it’s too disrupting to the overall flow of the book. Like ma’am, your writing style is “quirky”, and you’re trying too hard to be engaging. But this is too much. I’m going to have to ignore the footnotes.
