Ugh, I feel sick, what a depressing closure, another one to my pile of "I had few pleasurable moments reading this, but I can't deny its brilliance" books – I feel a certain kinship to Kafka, although his cynical world building and psychosexual logic makes me nauseous. His portrayal of women varies from silly to creepy (not necessarily bad), but otherwise I get all the systemic hopelessness, I really do.

Left the introduction for last (as I usually do with books by writers I'm already familiar with). A bizarre and luminous little book, damn Leonora, what a wild person.

Boring interpretations of Leonora's art, I much prefer to read about her life and her own words on things (most of the book), reading this tired take of her first self-portrait, only reminds me of Leonora herself saying: "You're trying to intellectualize something desperately, and you're wasting your time". This is still a good book.

Barely finding the time to read something other than genetic papers, but my current obsession with Leonora must go on, this one is serious, dark, and yet just as imaginative and beautiful as her other works.

O capítulo do espancador entrou para o meu cânone pessoal, perturbador e engraçado, o capítulo do advogado parece um conto de horror – lindo. Mas o monólogo do advogado me causou cansaço metatextual, que não diz respeito ao texto em si, mas como ele é percebido, parece ter sido feito sob medida para retratar burocracia, aposto que é lido e relido em faculdades de direito que o acham genial – e essa ideia me cansou.

Mais uma sugestão da natureza mutável daquilo que é narrado, o terreno nunca é sólido, a realidade sempre transiente.

Finalmente Kafka tá funcionando comigo, depois de várias tentativas a expectativa de ler os Diários, que chegam semana que vem, me motivou a ler seus romances de novo e acredito que dessa vez tenho, como leitor e ser social, mais bagagem para entender a verve surreal e o peso bruto das contradições desses livros, até o senso de humor grotesco tem me feito rir...

Although I get what Kavan is doing and I certainly admire her choices, particularly in the implied critique of science fiction sexism, this is still a tiresome read

Reading this has been such a hit or miss journey, the evolutionary biology arguments are seriously weak, some of the social arguments are deterministic and, to be fair, deeply flawed if you're familiarized with anthropology. Still, some parts present solid arguments and the data researched can be insightful. I mostly agree with the author's conclusions, just not always with her rationale.

To see life as a gift is to accept that one is born owing a debt.

Trying not to let the gender essentialism and the use of "evolutionary psychology" – one of the lamest spawns of Evolution theory along with social darwinism, to get in the way of the actual interesting ideas of this book, having a hard time, but I persist.

This book is fascinating...

My classes are back, so my time for reading greatly diminished, took a break to get back to SP's journals and although the events are repetitive there's some comfort in the monotony, plus the eventual insights into her work. She just used the "bell jar metaphor" for the first time in a 1952 entry, 11 years before the publication of the book.

I used to think that this cover was ugly, and I still do, but now that I've learned better, I think it's charming that a book about the ethics of suicide, among other things, has a cover painted by Jack Kevorkian

Essa frase da Sylvia me marcou não por considerá-la premonitória – detesto quando se reduz o legado de artistas suicidas às suas mortes – mas por demonstrar tão bem uma coexistência de esperança e aniquilação.

Started listening to this one as I was cooking for my boyfriend and I, it's heartbreaking and unexpectedly informative, yeah Joan was a intellectual it girl with privileges, but her heartfelt, yet sparing prose reveals artistry and intelligence. It also makes me so scared of losing loved ones, it's so hard to find them, how can you go on without them?

Eu não sei como, mas ler Clarice é como olhar um espelho ao mesmo tempo exato e distorcido. Essa pessoa que já estava morta décadas antes de eu nascer sabendo tanto de coisas que eu nunca falei, chega a ser meio perturbador... Me sentindo aquela moça de 17 anos, que ela menciona na entrevista de '77. Doideira como é a literatura.
