After my last few serious reads, I needed an afternoon of listening to an audiobook full of reflections on life, love, friendship and adulthood. And this definitely filled that space. I also felt a keen sense of pride when, at the end of the book, as Dolly’s last missive discussed the value of loving and being confident in your own company, I enjoyed a glass of wine at a restaurant on my own.

Barbara Demmick is so talented at painting people’s lives in alien places - I couldn’t stop listening to this audiobook. It feels like she’s describing the society from 1984 or the indoctrination of Gilead and attempted foreign aid from Canada in the Handmaids Tale, especially as she describes the worst of the famine from the 90s. I kept forgetting that this all really happened - and some of it in my lifetime
