No, völva were not sea priestesses, they were seers, and they were not Finnish, they were Norse. The word "völva" is not related to the word "vulva" in the slightest. They have entirely different roots.

Know what? I'm done.

Oh my salty god, an interview with Doreen frickin' Virtue. That just puts the whole tin lid on it, doesn't it.

Quite a few actual sea and water-based pagans out there, making amazing magic, but no. Here's Doreen Virtue.

Yes, redheads were considered bad luck on sea voyages. No, legend does NOT have it that all redheads are descended from "Lemurian Prince Idon" because that is made-up garbage found only on the internet.

I am getting so sick of having to put this book down every two sentences to fact check, you have no idea.

Since when is Björk (note spelling; again -- editor, where the heck are you?) a seer?

...nice omission of half the Janarric Runes, there. Look, in "White Magic" I might have let that one slide, but sea witchery by its very nature is grey -- embracing white AND black magic, and all the wonderful shades in between. The sea is neither positive or negative, it simply IS. As are ALL the forces of nature! Good grief...

So this section is just...vaguely connected dot points? I. Okay. Fire the editor, if they exist.

Secondly, oh my god enough with the "menstruation = holy womanhood" bullshit. Some women don't menstruate regularly. Some women don't menstruate AT ALL. Some women don't have uteri. What about post-menopausal women, do they just not count? Just stop this crap.

Oh my god, enough with the humble-bragging, Cavendish. You're the specialest witch who ever drew breath, okay, WE GET IT.

Two things RE: this page --
a) Lucy Cavendish is an utter Mary-Sue and it's starting to grate;
b) ...completely random mermaid folk talk in the middle of a chapter about sea-witches. Who edited this book? *Did* anyone edit this?

Unsure why there's a synopsis of a bunch of (sometimes vaguely) mermaid themed movies/TV shows in a book supposedly about sea spirituality. Quite annoying; skimmed the majority of this chapter...

There is such a staggering amount of misinformation and sloppy research in this book, it astounds me. Also the author has a tendency to humblebrag, and thus I have to doubt the veracity of some of her personal tales. Rather disappointed so far...

"Shesha naga, the cosmic snake representing the great mother goddess" ...since when? Shesha is a MALE deity. Also, Vishnu-as-Kurma never carried Shesha on his back in the Samudramanthan. What the heck? Where did the author get this info from?

Basically EVERYTHING regarding Kurma in this passage is completely erroneous. Disappointed.
