This very book is Emily’s special interest, one she often gets very hyperfixated on and puts of eating and sleeping to record in detail.

The confrontation with the faerie queen is very autistically relatable because Emily is very good at reading the folk, as she claims, because they’re very prideful and predictable. But she is not so good at reading or interacting with people. So when she walked in the room and realized the queen was mortal, that was probably her worst nightmare lol

Emily grew up being obsessed with the fae and having her own parents, along with herself, not understand how she fits in with normal people. I think Emily takes comfort in the non bums because that’s how she’s always felt. But this book swings another home run by delving into her mind and showing us that, despite feeling like an outcast, she IS human. As different as she is, she deserves the title all the same.

Another reason why this series is great autism rep is because it thwarts the theory that may people believe autistic people don’t feel empathy. In reality, most autistic people simply have a hard time reconciling how their emotional mind and their logical mind fit together. But the emotions are still there, begging to be embraced.

The idea that an autistic woman, in all her strange rigidity, quirkiness, and obsessive special interest, presents more of a danger to the faerie queen than an actual faerie prince is so amazing

The way heather fawcett creates and describes the fairy magic is incredible. It’s not the kind of magic where things begin floating or glowing. She describes things moving as being a trick of the eye, a shift in their depth of field. The actual fae she describes as being something in between the physical and not, as if they could be made of light and shadow. It’s almost un-picture-able which makes it more magical

Emily walks away from a conflict without much processing. Sometimes she notes a physical feeling she gets after a conflict, but if she does do any processing it’s about logistical inconsistencies in their argument.

The way heather fawcett writes magic is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s ethereal, it’s academic, it’s detailed, it gives me a feeling of enjoying the little details of life.

This series is really so special and I never see anyone talk about it. I rarely see it recommended or mentioned. It feels like such a special little world that only I belong to.

Emily panics about the idea of getting married because it signs her up for “a lifetime of tedious social obligations”

Emily also doesn’t understand the social convention of getting drunk on your birthday. She says alcohol is poison and why would you want to poison yourself for fun?

As per usual, I will be noting more AUTISTIC EVIDENCE in this book as I find it. And I will start off my noting that our queen Emily is sensitive to smells. And I also presume she purposefully timed her arrival to the cafe to where the food would already be there so that there would be no waiting around and no small talk.

I’m confused. If the shadows started moving after Luzia did her demonstration, wouldn’t it have been natural to assume Luzia had done it and that her power was of the devil? In the story it’s not, but that’s immediately what I assumed. Why is everyone acting like there is some secret killer on the loose? I think that’s what we’re meant to believe but I think it’s not sold well
