“As an enormously prolific writer whose work is still in print, Roosevelt is always close at hand… having labored mightily not only to understand himself but to convey this understanding to the world. Perhaps he was an original in the practice of narcissism in American politics. If there is anything you’d want to know, he conveniently directs your eye to a rich mythology” ohh yeah this my kinda book

Rereading (a/b) b/c I’ve been stuck on one of the quotes from this book since writing an interest statement for a job app & 3% in & lots already hitting as expected (stopped to right this as Park Hong defines “Racial self-hatred”)

rereading & also listening to this this time
first read was during spring of my 1L year & now in my 3L fall, im feeling grateful, proud, and reflective

a highlight: law school is hard for high achievers for many reasons but one thing that is key to surviving it is transitioning from extrinsic motivation to intrinsic motivation — extrinsic success becomes merely an added bonus to living the life you want to live

TRIGGER WARNING: SA

“she felt though a sense of shame that paralyzed and terrified her. She could barely breathe from the space it occupied in her. She was scared not only by the scale of it, but by the revelation that this feeling did not start with the r*pe. It had been there long before. The r*pe had merely laid it bare, rendering her unable to mask it with a substitute emotion”

On “women’s role in the world and the important enforcing hands of power in creating change”

Feeling #seen and resonating with Olga’s revolutionary mom (who was sent to an all-girls catholic school)

This ch: women conscious of space & time vs. men wasting (women’s) time. “Sometimes love looks like a savior” — women caring for men

She chose Liberation for herself & oppressed ppl

Afternoon Tea is my favorite story so far.

Style: short (6 pages!); great example of show not tell—dropped into and immediately immersed into the world; ends with reader wanting to know what comes next

Subjects: Sense of self, self-worth, racism, colorism, generational trauma, family, mentorship, woc experience, parables, reframing, pride, love

“At the place where people are made they didn’t have enough paint to make us really dark. We were going to be black, but they ran out of paint in the color department. There are a lot of people like us in the world. We didn’t get so many coats. But they didn’t paint white people at all, or only gave them very thin coats, which is why…
