Currey was one of the earliest biographers to seriously scrutinize Franklin's word as it related to his actual motivations and world events and posits that much of Franklin's work in England was not that of a warm-hearted moderate. Instead, he argues it was more akin to a devious schemer attempting to escalate tensions due to the Crown's snubbing of his plans for land speculation in the colonies.
