If I read about Cassandra (who is 30-sth and a trained elite super swordswoman) acting like a childish impulsive idiot, or about Hadrian treating her as a child and calling her "girl" one more time, I'm gonna scream. This used to be brilliant but I'm not so convinced by this book so far.

This was going to be 3.5-4 stars because it's such an interesting concept but the ending is so terrible it ruined the whole book.

I'd compare this to bad fanfic written by a 12yr old but that would be offensive to the fanfic... So bad so far 🤣

While the first two books in the series were good but sometimes took effort to get through, this one is just a mind-blowing pageturner from the first third onward. Can't wait to see where it goes from here!

I'm so annoyed that the storyline was not resolved at all in the first volume, in fact more plot twists were introduced in the last few chapters. I found the book meandering, so while it was entertaining at times, I've no desire to read the rest of the series. :/

I'm enjoying the story but how many times do you need to mention a character's balls? Why is one of the men lusting after his colleague and subordinate, imagining her serving him drinks in bikinis? Is the first thing men think of after radiation exposure really their sperm? 🙄

Interesting concept but it's a bit slow... and why does the MC freak out at wearing a bikini rather than a one-piece swimsuit?! 🤦🏼‍♀️ Like it's that scandalous?

Don't care about the characters, writing is clumsy, and it's just so... American. Politics, oppression, stereotypes. Only thing that keeps me reading is finding out where the boxes came from and why, but apparently there's NOTHING about that in the novel. I had been hoping for a sci-fi story, this is not it in the slightest. Another DNF for me, don't have the patience for boring books.

Why am I still reading this. The main female character is like those "women written by male authors" jokes.

The constant, pages-long infodumps are killing me.

Such a perfect coming-of-age book for summer. Slowburn, unputdownable, with such beautiful characters. Loving it so far!

Did not finish, so boring and slow. Not really fantasy, more like a historical novel about war.

So tempted to put this down and not continue. Bland, basic characters, too much telling instead of showing, nothing happening in the plot...

I'm enjoying this a lot, but can we please skip the chapters from Adare's POV? They're boring and (even though I shouldn't be saying this as a woman) she's an annoying, dumb bitch. (Would have loved a book about Anick or Gwenna, though.)

At 71%, I am seriously considering abandoning this book. I have been considering abandoning since I hit the 20% mark and couldn't care less for the book. Apex is nothing like the first two novels in the series. It's drawn out, slow, unexciting and doesn't motivate me to want to read. Too many new (uninteresting) character POV's, too little action. Such a disappointment!

So far, this book is blowing my mind. I love the intricacy of Claire North's plots!

This is one of the creepiest books I've read in a while. There's this intangible, underlying sense of terror, as if there was something nasty lurking just around the next corner.

Not a bad story so far, but it got predictable very quickly.

So far, I'm unimpressed... to the point where I'm contemplating ditching the book.

This is the best book in the series so far!

This is a good book, definitely, but my problem with it is that it switches POV every chapter and I'm struggling to get invested into any of the characters and their stories, because the author jumps between them so quickly, often before the story moves anywhere for that particular character.

I'm finding this book a little difficult to get into. I never thought a second-person narrator would bother me, but it somehow does? Also, I know Jos is a child, but I find the use of "mommy" and "daddy" a little excessive (and annoying).

What a brilliant book full of unexpected turns!

I love this book so far. Tehnically, it falls into the YA category, but the quality of writing and the depth of the characters far exceeds the YA average. The writing is so evocative and "visual".

I didn't have high expectations, which is why I'm not disappointed - it's not perfect, but it's such an easy, entertaining read that hits close to home.

So far, it's a slow read. The premise, however, is interesting. I hope this develops the way epic novels sometimes do and becomes a real page-turner.

The characters are such assholes. This is an upsetting book.
