The description of the Bengal famine of 1943 was absolutely horrifying.
Barely anybody remembers today that in order to feed the troops Churchill caused a famine in Bengal and Orissa.

I totally hate this book. It is likely the most cynical novel I have ever read. I will continue to the end hoping that there will be a sign of hope at some point, or at least at the very end. I am just astonished how perfectly the author matched expectations of the Western audience, especially American audience. That this horrible atrocity of a book is a "New York Times Bestseller" tells me quite a lot.

I am on page 51 and I am VERY impressed with the publication, the level of introspection of the young authors is (so far) very deep. Each story is highly individual and it stimulates deeper reflection.

Brilliantly written. Many topics are very difficult to absorb. Russian history is cruel and inhumane, but the people are always warm hearted and idealistic.

Rich, stimulating, provocative, courageous, generous. You need to be fully engaged in reading it to get the full impact of this prose.

Bardzo ciekawa, choć definitywnie bardzo inna niż znane mi dwie inne jego książki: "Czarne sezony" i "Carska filiżanka. Ta ostatnia szzególnie mi się podobała.

W moim odbiorze chatotyczna ksiazka, kazde z poruszanych zagadnien wymaga duzego komentarza. Na kazdej stronie przedwojenna Polska dostaje lanie za nieodrobione zajecia, a mi sie wlasnie wydaje ze podjete wtedy inicjatywy byly czesto wlasnie w punkt, i ze w niecale 20 lat zrobiono w Polsce wiekszy postep niz np. w Galicji w czasie ponad polwiecznego panowania Franciszka Jozefa.

Definitely, this book is a labor of love. I was surprised by the availability of documents, photos and memoirs. Of course, it took decades to locate them, but in other Eastern European countries so many archives perished in wars. There is a geographical line beyond which WWII has not reached. The book covers a lot of what's unknown, or barely known, in the West. Westerners continue being perplexed and even annoyed by

Książka ma trzy odrębne tematy: Europa wschodnia, Rosja, Trump. Najmniej udanym rozdziałem jest ten o Europie wschodniej, co się często zdarza. By uprościć czytanie amerykańskim czytelnikom wrzuca się wszystkie kraje do jednego gara. I w tym wypadku idea imitacji wydawała mi się też błędna, gdyż wiele z tych krajów po prostu odbudowywalo swe własne tradycje demokratyczne i celem zmian ustrojowych nie była imitacja US
