I’m a bit surprised I was expecting this book to go in a different direction but Im not mad at the points being made. The author points out that body positivity isn’t the answer to a system that is structurally violent towards fat bodies.

Americans were out here kidnapping black folk, infecting them with diseases leading to blindness, and throwing them into the ocean to collect insurance money sooooo they wouldn’t have to sell enslaved people for discounted rates. No wonder America hides their true history.

I am so enraged reading they subjected these women to internal searches and pretend it’s a choice. This system was and still is disgustingly violent to black bodies.

Giovanni is such a baddie! The banter between him and the main character had me kicking my feet 🤭

“Perhaps society is actually nothing more than an individual.”

The main character is constantly living in discomfort in hopes that no one will see the real him. In the one situation he is met with the option of experiencing happiness with a woman who mirrors his sadness he runs. His fear of the pain that may come from accepting happiness has him running for the hills

This is such a cozy book! The story follows a community of heart warming characters and their journeys towards connection. If you are looking for a low stakes book you can curl up in bed with this is it!
