this book is INSANE

Kind of regretting reading this before bed

I don't want this book to end but I can't put it down

That moment when you start a book and know it's going to be a favourite less than 5 pages in and then proceed to stay up reading wayyy past the time you should have slept even though you have to get up at 5am the next day

That was a fire introduction and translators note🔥

this is genuinely so so interesting to me, I just learnt that ancient roman women also wore pimple patches in fun shapes (like crescent moons), usually made of leather or silk?? they used kohl in exactly the same way I do? reading the descriptions of cosmetics used during this time is so interesting and fun WE ARE ALL THE SAME ACROSS HISTORY ughhh I <3 history

A lot of the events in this book feel like a barely disguised fetish from the author, like how does your mind even come up with these scenarios. Why is a 13yo girl peeing on a 13yo boy. Why is the poor beggar girl with LEPROSY being solely described by the size of her (pre-pubescent!!) breasts. Every second I’m reminded that this book has been written by a man.

I'm glad I've consumed 4 hours of documentary content by Mary Beard, as now when I'm reading this book I hear her (very engaging) voice narrating everything to me!

i don’t think i will ever stop relating to this book

frustrating finding an amazing author and reading through his incredible works and then being reminded of the fact that he is indeed still a Man. The story of Fata had 0 purpose other than to serve as an erotic male fantasy—I think Andric talked about her breasts more than her feelings or thought processes. It made me laugh honestly, “the girl’s breasts tightened in a brief spasm” ???
