The Roman woman of the ancient Republic has a place on earth, but she is still chained to it by lack of abstract rights and economic independence; the Roman woman of the decline is typical of false emancipation, possessing, in a world where men are still the only masters, nothing but empty freedom: she is free 'for nothing'.

Maternity was a disadvantage to women, during the ancient times when contraception was not available. Instead of being a sacred mission, reproduction was regarded as an natural function or even a burden that costed most of the time of a woman's life being unavailable for production, which as a result brought an inevitable need for man.

Chapter 6講人口動態跟永續發展的關係。當提到永續發展的障礙，學者都習慣提及生育率過高和人口過剩是環境問題的重要成因，強調着力減低人口增長率較高的窮國的生育率，就能緩和問題。我對這個論述有保留，因為此舉似乎忽視了富國與窮國分別的人均碳排放差距之大，繼而把責任推到窮國上，這是危險的。

I started this book 9 months ago. I can't wait to finish it and to rate it with 2 or 3 stars.

Climate crisis is urgent which is very obvious. But how to solve it? How the Green New Deal works? No concrete plans, but only repetitive blaming on capitalism, Republicans, Donald Trump, timid Democrats etc. I'm just disappointed by that.

History is not deterministic. We study history not to predict the future, but to understand that our present is neither natural nor inevitable, and that we consequently have many more possibilities before us than we imagine.

Feel like a bit similar to another book called "The Art of Thinking Clearly" which I'm currently reading. Let's see how it goes
