Pausing the audiobook to await my hardcopy hold. Robotic voices are tricky and the narrator is doing an absolutely fine job — just not my preference right now.

To my surprise, this turns out to be book 3 in the Cygnus Beta Series and not one of three unconnected SF works. I read and enjoyed The Best of All Possible Worlds (book 1) and will pause at chapter five of this book to go back and read The Galaxy Game (book 2).

A teenaged girl is about to be knifed and sexually assaulted and I’m not sure whether or when I’ll have the fortitude to get through this passage…

Ouch, it's taken me how long to read 120 pages? All too easy when the book is hardcopy without a library wait list...and not what I expected. Thus far, it's more YA than anything, and the glimpse of time travel didn't grab me. My fault for only dipping in and not marinating in the story?

I abandoned at 20%, not long after Maisie “closed her eyes and focused her calming energy on the other woman.” The exploration of resilience and post-war trauma interested me but the storytelling, like much of the investigator’s method, wasn’t satisfying.

My mind keeps wandering. All the elements are here but I can’t seem to care about the world, the characters, the problems…
