I think that. An emphasis on Cycles of Violence, There’s Nothing New Under the Sun, Only Slight Variations on the Same Theme— that works best if you’re at extreme ends of the occurrence spectrum. As in. Either there’s a Central Moment where the plot is brought to bear on itself, or again and again and again *everything* is revealed as a reflection of some past or future event. Miller committed to the latter.

I am reading this again I do not gaf. Noting that she is really committing to the use of the epic rhythm here…I only noticed it in the last third of the book on read 1 but it’s like, kinda whenever an Important Object Symbol or Theme is introduced, those syllables line right up so cleanly. Great stuff. Also the mirroring of images in the first couple chapters and last third is. Whew! Powerful!

I have finished. Which is to say I have been gutted like a fish and left to die in the sun. Very beautiful work you have done here Madeline Miller but at what a cost it was you did it. Christ

This is just………..This is just so good

Just spent 10 mins trying to untangle the timeline here on pen and paper with a calculator and realized it’s all fucked up and doesn’t make sense and contradicts itself in major unresolvable ways. This book is so sneaky in its concern with the unreliability of memory. Was sold as a confessional in the intro but I am beginning to feel I myself am 7 and have been brought to a meeting of the Liars’ Club

So so good. I love that she calls attention so often to the faultiness and warped nature of memory. Lends a sort of unreliable narrator feel which is so thoughtful and interesting in a memoir context. Also the way she writes about masculinity is like, so heartwrenchingly tender

I still can’t find this ever loving book. I’m going and getting another copy after work fuck it. Anybody wants me to mail my stupid extra one to em when I’m done and find the other one holler.

Tried to read this a while ago and I think maybe it just wasn’t the right time. Now it might be— books that fell beyond my understanding even just a few years ago so often strike me now as so tender and funny and true and at least that’s evidence of some degree of personal growth and change if little else is, Ha Ha

The way this book is layered through time and generations is obviously so genius but perhaps my favorite thing is that the story being genius does not in any way hinder every subsequent vessel of the reincarnated spirits of Catherine earnshaw and Heathcliff from being the most annoying people you have ever read about in your life. And the tragedy does lie partly in the world being so annoyed with these ppl too.

Shakes book in the air so all the pages flap in the wind I Love This Thing. WHO does this kind of tone anymore nobody. Campy humor + toxic perfect train wreck romance + nasty juicy gossip + gorgeous awful annoying people = incisive social commentary and insight + real tragedy. It is so much fun and so silly and so dramatic and so serious. HOW DID SHE DO IT
