Glad I stuck with this as it's gotten so much better!

Craziest shit in here so far:
- Black sheriff does extended riff on Little Black Sambo
- protagonist takes a job in law enforcement that his grandfather also held and which Stephen King 100% made up

One character is named Cal and one character is named Kel. This is unacceptable.

A little bit disappointed that I am not loving it as much as House of Mirth .... but then, there are few books in this world as good as The House of Mirth.

On the whole, pretty threadbare, but I did like this quote: "The sun breaks through a sky honeycombed with clouds. Behind Anne de Créon, a tall French door in which her figure is reflected, fragmented by the eighteen pages. Not this gay man being like "she's a feminist ... but she wears nail polish???" I realize it's the 80s but calm down.

I guess this is where Jordan finally hits his stride? (Only to lose it again later.) The Simion/Noam sequence is so heartbreaking.

Love that a character who is in love with a swordsman and in the last book told him she doesn't care that he's sworn to spend his life fighting the Shadow is now described as hating all swords. Perfect continuity. No notes.

The few chapters with Mat and Rand where Jordan tries for a nonlinear narrative—why?
