it shouldn't be taking me so long to finish reading a book that i do actually enjoy. i'm reading like 3.5 different books at once so all 3.5 of them are taking an eternity

this book just feels like one long “tell me you’re neurodivergent without telling me you’re neurodivergent” re: the protagonist

Absolutely and unexaggeratedly blown away by this artist’s capacity to capture the exact tenor, the exact ambiance, of what it’s like to live in Florida. (I would know; I lived there for most of my life.) What’s extra impressive is that he’s not even from there, let alone from the States or even North America

Thank God this book is funny because if not it would be impossibly depressing to read...if it isn't already

Started reading this three years ago for one of those pandemic zoom book clubs that were popular at the time. I only read the first few chapters, but it blew my mind. Excited to be restarting it now

I'm just not really sure why the author and publisher wanted this to be a trilogy. All three books are basically the same. The only significant change among them is the setting.

I admit I am enjoying this book, but it is remarkable how unlikable the narrator is

morbidly compelling, i'm surprised by how much i'm tearing through it

This was almost going to be a DNF from me--not that the book doesn't touch upon important subjects, but some of the writing feels so amateur/fan-fic-esque it pains me--BUT now it's getting juicy so I guess there's no turning back now

DNF (although I admit I didn't exactly give this a fair shot). The translation is stuffy, and the writing hasn't been clicking for me at all so far

YESSSSS IM SO EXCITED I've been wanting to read this for so long
I've already seen the word "sociolinguistics" (my favorite topic ever) on the first page so let's goooo

i'm already so tired of the narrator waxing poetic about how incredible and beautiful Ariel is. it reads like Lolita (although thankfully without the gratuitous creepiness, which is why I'm reading on, at least for now). but seriously, his admiration for Ariel feels so exaggerated and ridiculous that i've almost burst out laughing at certain points. it's particularly cringe-worthy because it doesn't seem intentional.

Yeahhh baby I think this is gonna be a DNF from me. I like Neil Gaiman's writing, but this book really isn't doing it for me. The thing about 500+ page books is that they've gotta be doing it for ya. I probably WOULD go to the trouble of finishing it if it were shorter.

The subtle casual sexism certainly isn't helping; as I said in a prior update, I can't kick the feeling that this reads like westernized Murakami.

Very mixed feelings so far! This almost feels like an Anglo edition of Murakami to me.

This will be my second book by this author. I'm remembering how much I ADORE the way she writes. Also, it's very cerebral. Very intense. Impossible to always be in the mood for it
