Been tearing through this one today. A beautiful, tough Aussie novel, easily on par with Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea for its simplicity... except Foster isn't old, and he's at sea with a blackfella named Bill, and he has a world of shit waiting for him back home. Novels don't get much more Ocker than this. Just wonderful.

Only just finished, and don't really know what to think yet, other than that I will be thinking about Willnot for some time. Beautiful in just about every way. Might have to come back to this review when my mind has had more time to digest what I just read.

I knew James Sallis wrote Science Fiction once upon a long time ago, but I did not expect Willnot to start taking side trips into the speculative. More intrigued with every carefully chosen word.

You have to trust James Sallis before you start reading. You have to know that he'll give you what you need, when you need it and not before. His prose is so sparse, but everything is there. Only 20 or so pages into Willnot and already he has me intrigued and eager and hungry for more. Not just for the story, but for his expertly sketched characters.

Enjoying this so far, as much as you can enjoy so much darkness and violence. Sits in an Old West sweet spot between McMurtry and McCarthy.

Thought provoking, mystifying, constantly surprising. Can't wait to turn the next page.

This 'tough read' gets easier as it moves along and you fall into the style. And, the effort is definitely worth it. I guess a lot of people won't like the comparison, but so far I'd say this is the best far-future Utopian SF I've read since John C. Wright's "Golden Age" trilogy.

Hmm, might have been wrong about giving up on this one early. Still a tough read due to the 18th century writing style -- you have to read closely and attentively -- but the ideas just in the first couple of chapters really have me intrigued and excited.

Witty, daring and very fast-moving... I just can't keep from turning the page!

It has taken me quite a few pages to find the rhythm of Savages. It's a very different book to Power of the Dog or The Cartel. But, I'm really starting the love the word play and experimentation with form that Winslow is doing here. Gets better with every page.

Not quite sure where 'Haints Stay' is going, but I'm enjoying it. Like Patrick deWitt and Jim Jarmusch got together to write something with the feel of Cormac McCarthy's Outer Dark. Very strange, quite disturbing. The Weirdest West.

Sanders' clipped prose moves the story along at a frantic and violent pace.

Amazing how closely the style of Sanders' prose matches the style I've adopted for my current work in progress.
