Veda blinks back tears, scrubbing them away as they fall. "I don't know how."
Calm and controlled, despite the tremble of his own nerves, Hiram opens his hand. "Let me show you."

"Just because you can handle everything alone doesn't mean you have to." He's close enough for his fingertips to skim her chin. "Share the weight, Veda. I'm strong enough to carry it."

Hiram's hand covers hers, his grip warm and solid. A rescue from deep waters.
He's prickly like a rough rope. Quiet and steady. Her tether.

"Since it's not your reality, it's not your problem, isn't that right?"
"That's not what I said."
"You don't need to. Your silence says enough. Raise your son, no one can fault you, but don't act like you're better than your family because you're not a loud, proud bigot. Say something, say anything. Have an original thought. Take a stand…I’ve never known a good man who spectates.”

"I'd pursue you to no end. You are the only home I've ever truly known," he murmurs against my lips.
"And I'd fall in love with you over and over, should I forget. I would always find solace in your eyes. Love inside your heart."

I am only a wicked man filled with demons, but she makes me feel like the sea on a stormless night—calm and clear.

“I will always choose you, Em. Over anything. I want to prove that to you. No matter what becomes of me and the monster they made me, I'll only obey you."

"I don't know what hurt worse: watching you fall in love with me even though I tried to keep you away, or not being able to pull you against my chest every single night and hold you... Just holding you would've been enough for me." He pauses and sucks in his lower lip slowly. "There could be endless versions of you, and I'd love each one as fervently and entirely."

The sound of him broken and in this state sets something loose inside me that I didn’t know existed until now. I want to burn the entire world down for what it's done to him. For what it's done to both of us.
