The beginning of the book is a smidge overwhelming. All of the characters are introduced in 2 pages and a young man who hasn’t reached his twenties has died. I suppose it is overwhelming for a reason as describing war with such meek a word would earn you a guffaw. The first 2 chapters is an introduction to the daily struggles of young soldiers who have lost their faith in the world and the adults who lead them.

I’m already a third into the novel and I’m still completely apathetic towards the story. I have no idea if I think it’ll be a life-changing read that’ll affect my daily life from here on out, if I despise it with the entirety of my very soul, or somewhere between those two. It’s all Holden’s annoyed and over the top responses to others or stories to learn about his past or his personality.
