Why do I keep getting disappointed :( I'm on chapter 4 and it's very repetitive so far, with scattered interesting facts. The next chapter (the birth of Jesus/Isa) looks relatively promising but I think I was looking for something much more scholarly, with less waxing poetic about some vague ideal of spirituality and more engagement with feminist criticism of Mary/Maryam's legacy.

Really clunky prose. And all the characters seem to do is sigh and mumble and say "um" and blurt things out and get on each other's nerves. But I'm still holding out hope.

The first literary 'crazy lady' I've encountered who's bored me with her thoughts.

I fell in love with her the moment she fondly described how she used to cut a few inches off her hair every time she didn't reach her learning goal as a child.

Got me highlighting a good 60% of every page. I wonder why it is that I can't read religious philosophy all at once? It was the same with Gravity and Grace and that was even more readable.

Has nothing on Best of Friends so far :/

I want to be friends with her so bad. I can't believe this book is over a thousand years old!

Continuing to be impressed by details of characterisation on every page, most recently the moth-catching divorce lawyer and Alexandrovitch lisping on 'suffering' in the middle of his speech and Levin working himself up into passions of economic theory over a fresh-faced woman in clogs.

Reading the porn section has been more painful than reading any of the other chapters. Wish it was less repetitive too, although I get why considering these are speeches to different audiences.
