Accurate title is accurate!

A very engaging look at perception and memory… how we recall events is impacted by how they confirm or contrast how we remember ourselves.

Book jumps around in time a lot and I am not sure what driving points Tyler is seeking to make. But it is interesting, like putting a big puzzle together without a photo of what it looks like when completed.

Reading this for EfM. Very dense. I like the quote beginning on page 36 that puts very specific instructions found in scripture into context.

"These acts, though terribly real, have been sanitized by becoming symbols. They have been stripped of their horror by being invested with religious meaning. They have been justified and thereby exonerated as part of a religious template that is even larger than myth and history. They are elements of a ritual scenario that makes it possible for the people involved to experience safely the drama of a cosmic war."

"Religion has fueled alienation and conflict ... exacerbated intolerance, injustice and oppression. Some of the ghastliest atrocities have happened in the name of religion. It need not be so if we can learn the obvious: that no religion can hope to have a monopoly on God, on goodness, virtue and truth."

Because of sanctioned ignorance in our learning... diverse groups are not equal in entering dialogue. The dominant group is not required to know the subjugated knowledge of the marginalized groups. Therefore, a de-centering of the dominant group is essential.
