Too Loud a Solitude
"my two-floor Holesovice apartment is all books: what with the cellar and the shed long since packed and the kitchen, pantry, and even bathroom full, the only space free is a path to the window and stove"
just saw a glimpse of my probably not so distant future

Moon of the Crusted Snow (Moon, #1)
I should've learned my lesson from Station Eleven that post-apocalyptic novels are not for me and my anxiety. Oh no no no no. Imsofreakedout.

The Mountain Is You: Transforming Self-Sabotage Into Self-Mastery
“Life is very often working in our favor…”
Man, this is the third book I’ve read recently that has said something to this effect.
Lately I think there’s just no way that’s true for me but I hope so…

Dealing with Diabetes Burnout
your feelings are valid and common <3
"i feel resentful that i have to pay so much money for supplies that i rely on to live"
"i feel as though no matter how hard i try, it's impossible to achieve well-rounded numbers"
"i want to be able to eat whatever i want"
"the world we live in doesn't exactly support life with diabetes"
"we're being asked to manage something our body is supposed to do all on its own"

If an Egyptian Cannot Speak English
Read the description of this a few months ago and it had me at "a cafe in Cairo" obviiiiiiously. Typical.

I'm maybe slightly more pleased with the Awards nominees this year?
It's still early so I'm guardedly optimistic but I really enjoyed The World's Worst Assistant, Bomb Shelter, and Starry Messenger.
I started More Than You'll Ever Know a few days ago and I'm really liking it so far.
I just bought Stay True, The Man Who Could Move Clouds, Agent Josephine, and Nightcrawling a few days ago, so activate hermit mode

Red Paint: The Ancestral Autobiography of a Coast Salish Punk
"Hearing Richard say that he still cared for me filled me with a deep sense of relief...I had always cared for him too. His love had lit a secret candle in a dark corner of my heart. Like a tenant you just can't evict, that secret space had always been his."

Why Fish Don’t Exist: A Story of Loss, Love, and the Hidden Order of Life
goddammit I WAS rather enjoying this and then i googled our homeboy and turns out he was a white supremacist/eugenicist. Lulu is a good writer and I'll finish this, but I'm loath take inspiration from a white supremacist racist eugenicist.

My life will never be the same now that I was diagnosed with diabetes, but I hope reading will always be my escape. My life is forced to be different from just a few days ago when I went into the ER, but at least we have dogs and books.
(And special shout-out to my biological maternal grandfather who also was diagnosed at 35 with diabetes thank you for the faulty pancreas ❤️)

Fresh Banana Leaves: Healing Indigenous Landscapes Through Indigenous Science
It’s always interesting when the book I’m reading intersects, or fits, in real time to current events. Earlier in the book she talked about national parks & specifically mentioned Mt Doane in Yellowstone & how it was named after a white man who massacred Indigenous peoples. Just saw today in the news that it’s being renamed, which is great. But it’s just one small, first step on the road to decolonize…
