I did not expect to be taken in so fully by this narrative, but I absolutely adore the manner in which Charlotte Bronte presents Jane's memories and internal dialogue.

"He needed a first-class ticket to ride in Alice's world, and science was issuing no tickets in that class." Yuck.

"I guess the old country is so overpopulated that they have not enough decent weather for everybody."

I get the distinct impression from O'Keefe's writing that T. Roosevelt was in love with Alice Lee's family and the atmosphere of Chestnut Hill rather than Alice herself. Given the attention given to the family and home rather than lovely Alice.

"It is a striking, even strange sequence of thought, how the loss of a father would somehow be made up for by the acquisition of a wife, as if these two roles were interchangeable."

The book, so far, is interesting. A little heavy on the quotes and light on meaning or relevance. But I think what's bothering me most right now is O'Keefe's lack of viewing Roosevelt through the lens of his time instead of ours. He is a progressive and believed in women's rights to be sure, but he was raised in a time when a boy's father was the pinnacle of their world and he reflects that in his diary entries.

I was unaware that Theodore's uncles fought for the South nor that they were considered so vile in their actions against the United States that they were excluded from amnesty granted much of the South. And allegedly channeling money to fund the assassination of Lincoln! I can't imagine the man Teddy would have become if his mother's family had a larger role in his life.

"What you want to be doesn't change what you are without work."

Wait. When did it become okay for Violet to tell people about Andarna?

Felix is a fantastic foil.

I knew he couldn't be everything he was made out to be.

I appreciate that not everything has gone to plan for Violet, but, yikes!

It has been a long time since I have been so drawn into a book that I think about it regularly and wish I could be reading instead of whatever I am supposed to be doing.

So, basically, a giant American Ninja Warrior course?

The Man's philosophy on books is so heartbreaking (I know it's intentional). I'd rather have conversations with someone who knows a book passionately than someone who knows a book superficially simply because he wants to be the most prolific reader.

Penelope's righteous indignation is a laugh. Both her and Colin are hypocrites in the extreme and so deserving of each other. There's no way their loves would be peaches and cream.

"He'd never been the angry, brooding type." - I think the previous portion of the book proves that's a lie.

Wow, Penelope, cornering the market on dissatisfaction and pain, are we? I really dislike when people (fictional or not) downplay other's feelings because their circumstances are not as bad. I didn't like Penelope in the television series, and so far, I don't care for her in the book either.

Ah, so it's time for a Cinderella story I see.

How is having lines from books pop into your head weird? Most people I know have quotes from various media pop into their head all the time.

Innes's speech is very intriguing when you know the rest of the story. The modern injustice on a woman versus the historical.
