I cant believe how much ive enjoyed this book actually

every time i read banana yoshimoto i’m reminded why she’s one of my favorite authors

anaïs nin you are that girl

banana yoshimoto writes in this style that invites the reader into the scene, as if they’re being told the story by an attentive narrator over coffee or tea. i love that i get to be in tokyo, eating typic japanese food and drink, in an japanese-style apartment. i’m enmeshed in the scene not as a foreigner with an outsider’s gaze but as someone whose reality is nothing beyond the story’s setting and events.

“In New York people seem intent on not seeing each other. Only children look with such unashamed curiosity. Poor white man, wandering and lost in his proud possession of a dimension in which bodies become invisible to the naked eye, as if staring were an immodest act.“

good to see that nothing has changed

this is the last book i read where the female protagonist is dealt so much grief and so little reprieve. where she not only suffers at the hands of life but the people in her life take it upon themselves to 1. never defend her 2. add on to the burdens. i’m demanding better for myself

i’m intrigued in the progression of the romance between the main character and his crush but i am genuinely confused reading a book in second person aka “you”

i’m choosing to stop at the first couple of chapters because i’m a little disheartened. i think it’s interesting that the group of friends are all mixed race women. i think that can be done because that is an experience but it would have to be executed with care and caution. already got hints of anti-blackness from the first couple chapters that other reviews have addressed affirming my feelings!

this should be on everyone’s reading list. feels like a big hug 100% recommend

updating to say that i sighed when i started this book and realized it’s 500+ pages on my ipad bc i like to be able to finish a book quicker (150-300 is my sweet spot for novels). BUT the writing style is so intriguing, smooth and clever that i seamlessly glide through the chapters. i’m almost at the halfway mark 🎉

i love nwaubani’s writing style and they way she uses language. i dont know which direction the story is developing towards but it’s easy to be patient while she paints a very seamless picture of the characters and their current circumstances

one day i’ll read this book and not be beaten and bruised by the convoluted ass way it’s written. but until then i will read it every year

she’s a cute girl so far we love a good juicy plot. also i want to kick amari’s ass all she’s done so far is be spoiled

...oh lord this better be good do i look like i have time to read a 500 page book that isn’t juicy and amazing. jesus be a shield

i’m thoroughly enjoying this book. everyone knows she’s an inspirational person but there’s no reason she should be this funny

i actually want to read books about black travelers/non-white travelers who don’t go on exploitative journeys. like they travel sustainably and with intention unlike c*l*nizers hmmm
