Well paced narrative. A few typos. Sometimes his prose wind around itself in a way that confuses his point. Interesting stories.

I find reading this book difficult. I am through chapter 4 and have not found the rhythm of his prose nor enough historical facts to hold my attention. And I cannot see where his storyline is going.

his commentary on and detail of what it's like to row is enjoyable even if have to suffer through his pride and indulgence of Ivy League competition between uber-privileged (i.e., young, healthy, strong, white) men. Skip ego (i.e. skip pages) hunt for the juicy, technical nuggets in the book.

My attention is easily thrust into the pages of his densely packed chapters. He is well read. Though he allows his extensive knowledge of the vectors of influence between writers influencing pre-WWI political movements to foment frequent, though nonetheless engrossing digressions. You will gain a list of seminal books to read next.

The joys of the book are found far beyond her seemingly thorough examinations of the arts of the subcontinent. the author gives delightful brief histories like that of the postcard she delivers in chapter 4.
