Maybe not the escape from the COVID-19 epidemic and the first week of Arizona summer I was looking for, since it's set in SF during a smallpox outbreak during an exceptionally hot August in the 1870s.

If the author photo on the back flap didn't say otherwise, I'd have thought this was written by a quickly-approaching-old-age man. Marlow throws out these quietly misogynistic lines like once every couple chapters. It's especially bad since the only people he interacts with are women.

A list of characters would have been helpful, but that might just be because I keep putting it down for long stretches.
