In the 19th century, the whole "scientific racism" thing attempted to ascribe a genetic/heritable component to social class. It succeeded. The Eugenics movement in the US was based on social Darwinism - on keeping "the wrong kind" of white people from reproducing. It was just as vile as it sounds.

The days of American slavery are perversely, morbidly fascinating to me, and this book provides information that I didn't know. This was one of the recommended texts from the Slate podcast series on slavery.

This book is a fascinating collection of primary sources about the reasons behind the Civil War, but it's slow reading. It's hard to slog through long speeches of unapologetic white supremacy.

Every time Gin (our protagonist) mentions Owen Grayson, I mentally picture Rep. Alan Grayson. I know that's weird, but I can't help myself.

This is the most hipster book I have ever read. Earnest artisanal butcher and hunky gay man Darien meets a society of gay werewolves who are systematically eliminating greedy slumlords and developers who would change the essential old fashioned and authentic character of their neighborhood in Brooklyn. It's a fun read, though.

So far, I'm not loving this. So far, it's a whiny woman with a serious alcohol problem, and that's not the sort of story I enjoy.
