I definitely expected Azad to betray Soraya, but I thought he'd be a Prince Hans, not the Shahmar.

I forgot how much I liked this author.

The world building is already lush and vibrant.

She does an excellent job of expressing how Jaq’s mother doesn’t listen to her even when Jaq tells her what she feels and the inner conflict of body dysmorphia with Fern. The author makes it very easy to empathize with Jaq, not just pity her, for wanting to remain cursed with heteronormativity.
